National Tea Research Institute (NTRI) established in 1986 by a multinational company Lever Brothers Pakistan Limited in collaboration with Govt. of Pakistan in an attempt to fulfill Pakistan's need of Tea locally. This Tea research station is first and the largest project of Tea in Pakistan. This station covers a total area of 50 Acers in which 8 acres is built up area (comprising Tea processing plants) 12 Acers Nursery and 30 Acers Tea Garden Pakistan is ranked the fourth largest tea consuming country in the world. In 2010, 0.120 million tons of tea was legally imported in Pakistan which makes up for 55% of the total tea consumption. The rest of the 45% is produced locally and shinkiari is the main source of this local production. Pakistan has got great natural reserves like shinkiari, which if utilized to their full potential will enable Pakistan to substantially decrease its tea imports from Kenya and other countries. Power shortages in recent years have crippled business in shinkiari. The government needs to re-plan tea cultivation and its promotion in Pakistan.
